It’s only a few days until Easter weekend and for fixed brace-wearers this can be a frustrating time; but don’t fret, as there are still tasty alternatives to the confectionary that can jeopardise your treatment – read on to find out how to adapt for the Easter period with fixed braces….
What types of food can I eat with fixed braces around Easter time?
Brace wearing is synonymous with eating soft foods so as to avoid damaging the brace as well as limiting the amount of sugar you are consuming. This is because plaque and tartar build up much more easily when you have braces, with food particles easily becoming stuck in your brace hardware and leaving you susceptible to cavities and potential gum disease.
- Greek yoghurt and honey dessert – high in calcium, dairy products are great for maintaining healthy tooth enamel and yoghurt will not cause any damage to your brace. Combine it with honey as a swap for sugar, and you’ve got yourself a healthy and tasty alternative to desserts that might cause you some problems with your brace.
- Gingerbread – gingerbread is a great choice if you feel you need a sugar boost during your treatment as it’s relatively low in sugar and soft in consistency, so you can be safe in the knowledge that you won’t damage your brace hardware, but don’t forget to enjoy in moderation!
- Cheese – it’s widely known that cheese is a friend to your teeth, proven to have anti-cavity properties. Cheese stimulates the production of saliva, thus boosting the ph level in your mouth which in turn helps to cleanse your teeth of unwanted bacteria.
Is there a way around limiting my diet when I’m undergoing orthodontic treatment?
Yes – Invisalign clear aligners. A removable appliance that is also bracket and wire-free, Invisalign is popular with patients who are looking for a minimally-invasive solution. As they are removable, you do not need to worry about your diet during the treatment period; Invisalign allows patients a 2 hour window each day in which to remove the aligners to brush and eat.
