It’s a new year and with it comes spring term at primary and secondary schools. The change of term also brings a change of sports on the curriculum and some of these are contact sports such as rugby, hockey, squash and martial arts. Offer your child the best level of protection for these sports by having a custom-made orthodontic mouthguard created here with us at Park Lane.
Did you know that 40% of injuries to teeth occur during sport? Orthodontic mouthguards can help reduce the likelihood of a serious injury requiring complex treatment. Shop-bought mouthguards cannot offer anywhere near the same level of protection as a mouthguard created for a person’s exact tooth and jaw structure. Here at Park Lane, we will take impressions of your child’s teeth so that they can provide measurements for their mouthguard. But why do mouthguards need to be an exact fit for your child’s teeth? Read on to find out how they offer superior protection to shop-bought versions….
Shop-bought vs orthodontic
As orthodontic mouthguards are made to the shape of your bite, there is no excess space between your teeth and the guard and if contact occurs, this makes a serious injury less likely to occur; the teeth are fixed in place and the guard takes the majority of any blow. Orthodontic mouthguards stop your jaws from closing together fully when contact occurs and could reduce the risk of concussions and joint injuries.
One-size-fits-all mouthguards are particularly prone to changes in shape especially if exposed to extreme temperatures, whilst custom-made versions have more resilience in this area and so maintain their protective qualities more effectively. Ensure that your child places their mouthguard back inside its box after use to avoid it collecting any debris.
We can create your child’s mouthguard to come in a choice of several different colours – having the choice of colour often serves as a good motivator when it comes to wearing the guard during sports at school.
