There are many different options available on the market, so you need to ensure you choose the right orthodontic treatment that’s best for you. Here we outline some of the various different treatments and how they can effectively straighten your teeth.
Invisalign Braces
Invisalign braces are the newest and most invisible way to straighten your teeth. They use a set of invisible retainers, known as an aligner, to straighten the teeth. The treatment starts with a series of photographs, x-rays and impressions taken of your mouth. These scans are used to create 3D images, to virtually show how the teeth will be straightened over time. The computer images will then be used to create your own custom set of aligners. Each aligner will is worn for around 2 weeks and you will be able to see your teeth gently straighten out through the process. Invisalign braces benefits those who want to have straight teeth, but do not like the idea of having visible braces.
Fixed Braces
With fixed braces, the teeth have small attachments glued to them with metal wires running through. Also known as ‘train-track braces’ as when they are fixed to the upper and lower teeth, they look like railway lines. Fixed braces are simply glued onto the teeth and adjusted every 4 weeks. When used for children, they are usually made of stainless steel as they are easier to keep clean. But to make them more aesthetically pleasing for adults, white ceramics or acrylics are applied. Fixed braces can also be glued to the back of the teeth using lingual fixed appliances.
Removable Braces
Removable braces are very practical as they can be removed easily. But they must be worn full time and can only ideally be removed when they have to be cleaned. The brace is usually good if you have a simple problem, like moving a single tooth. There is no discomfort at all associated with a removable brace, as it is fitted simply by clipping it onto several different teeth. Removable braces are adjusted every 4-8 weeks.
Functional Braces
Functional Braces are used to adjust the growth pattern of your jaw. Like removable braces, they can be taken off for cleaning, but have to be worn full time. They can help to correct the jawline when one jaw is bigger than the other.
